RDSA 2026 World Oral Health campaign

Campaign

The Rwanda Dental Students Association (RDSA) transformed the global World Oral Health Day from a single day into a month-long and ambitious public health campaign across March 2026. Aligning with the universal mission to reduce the burden of non-communicable oral diseases, RDSA designed a multifaceted mobilization strategy to bridge the systemic inequities in oral health education, prevention, and early intervention across diverse population demographics in Rwanda. Utilizing a continuous-engagement model, our members as future dentists executed a structured campaign that went from rural and urban targeted school visits, specialized inclusive and sepcial needs focus, busy commercial market hubs, national institutional collaborations, and mass media broadcasts.

The execution of the campaign was defined by five core pillars:

  1. Targeted School Visits and Early Prevention: Interventions at EP Kibagabaga (hosting 876 pupils) and GS Kimironko I (exceeding 2,500 students) captured children during the critical mixed dentition phase to establish lifelong hygiene behaviors. Alongside dynamic interactive assemblies demonstrating proper brushing with fluoridated toothpaste, randomly sampled diagnostic screenings uncovered early caries risks, overcrowding, and deep fissures. RDSA implemented on-site preventative measures by distributing cavity-preventative xylitol lollipops and structurally recommending immediate clinical applications of fluoride varnish and pit/fissure sealants.
  2. Inclusive Oral Healthcare: Recognizing vulnerable groups, RDSA carried out an adaptive, inclusive school outreach at HVP Gatagara in the Huye District. Serving students living with hearing and physical impairments, the team partnered with sign-language interpreters to eradicate communication barriers, enabling inclusive learning while directly engaging caregivers to build continuous home-support frameworks.
  3. Adult Community Outreaches: At the busy and popular Kimironko Market, RDSA targeted working-class adults who face severe time and financial barriers to routine dental care. Screenings for 520 individuals mapped severe disease burdens, finding a mean age of 33 years and an average of 1.7 decayed teeth per person alongside widespread periodontal disease and edentulism. Crucially, counseling addressed behavioral risk factors like tobacco and alcohol use while driving a significant surge in patient referrals directly to the University of Rwanda Teaching Clinic.
  4. National Policy Integration: Demonstrating massive volunteer mobilization, RDSA joined the Ministry of Education, Rwanda Biomedical Centre, and WHO at the National WOHD Celebration at G.S. Bumbogo. Student volunteers screened over 2,000 students and actively facilitated sustainable infrastructure development, notably supporting the installation of multi-partner WASH program water tanks to reinforce daily hygiene. This was a follow up to the National Oral Health Strategic Plan (2026-2030) that was drafted with the support of RDSA and emphasizing the Upstream Intervention.
  5. Mass Media & Broadcast: To bypass geographical barriers, an interactive live broadcast on RBA’s Radio Huye 100.4 FM educated thousands of parents on introducing early childhood oral hygiene. Simultaneously, simple, visually impactful graphic posters across X, Instagram, and WhatsApp secured a digital footprint reaching over 10,000 individuals.

In total, the campaign directly educated, provided clinical screenings, and distributed 3,992 free toothbrushes and toothpastes. By utilizing SPSS software to statistically analyze collected clinical data, RDSA is actively developing a cross-sectional study for scientific publication, ensuring this campaign leaves a lasting academic blueprint for evidence-based dental care in East Africa

Press coverage details
A dedicated live educational talk show segment was hosted on Radio Huye 100.4 FM (an affiliate of the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency - RBA). The popular show ("Igicamunsi Cyawe", hosted by Chaquilla Ingabire) aired on March 12, 2026, at 12:30 PM, focusing directly on the "Benefits of training oral hygiene to your children early" as we had delegates teach how to care for early children health.

The live program served as a mass public health lecture. RDSA deployed a delegation of dental student leaders and pediatric health advocates directly into the studio to lead the discussion. These delegates provided listeners with a breakdown of early childhood oral physiology, explicitly focusing on how to care for infants' and young children's oral health before and during the mixed dentition phase. The broadcast went beyond theoretical advice by offering practical, step-by-step guidance for parents and caregivers tuning in across the region. Delegates taught proper, age-appropriate toothbrushing techniques, explained the strategic importance of using regulated fluoride toothpaste to prevent early childhood caries, and discussed the systemic impact of early sugar consumption on a child's long-term development. By dedicating a premium live broadcasting slot to pediatric preventative dentistry, this media activity successfully bridged the gap between clinical knowledge and the community, empowering thousands of families with the tools to cultivate healthy oral habits from a child's very first tooth.
